New research has found that animals exposed to second-hand smoke can go on to develop a whole host of health problems including cancer, cell damage and weight gain.
The study, by the University of Glasgow, also showed that pets are at greater risk from passive smoking compared to humans because they spend more time in the home and closer to carpets where carcinogenic particles linger.
The study found cats are particularly at risk from second-hand smoke through passive smoking, potentially due to extensive self-grooming, and that dogs which have been castrated are more likely to put on weight than those in a smoke-free home.
These results are worrying.
Nearly all of us are aware of the dangers of passive smoking, but it’s awful to think that one’s own cigarette habit might also be having a devastating effect on your pet’s health.
Many thousands of smokers are using e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional tobacco products and there’s growing evidence that they can help people stop smoking for good.
As well as being 95% less harmful than smoking, e-cigarettes don’t contain tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most harmful elements in tobacco smoke.
Our products are a more cost-effective choice and customers who begin using them to replace traditional tobacco products often find themselves making huge savings as well as reaping all the health benefits that not smoking can bring.
